Mason teens use summer break to help kick cancer | MasonBuzz.com

Most teenagers spend their summer breaks sleeping in and hanging out with their friends at the pool or mall.?? A group of Mason students had a different idea.

Freshmen Jackson Brown, Nathan Domeck, Carver Nabb, Sam Wendall and Mason Middle School eighth-grader Audrey Adkins spent the tail end of their summer campaigning for the Be the Match Foundation.

The foundation works with the Be The Match Registry to provide marrow or cord transplants to people with leukemia, lymphoma and other life-threatening diseases.

?Because we couldn?t join the registry since we?re not 18 yet,?we developed a campaign which encouraged kids to get their parents to join the registry during the 3rd Annual Soccer Marrowthon,? said Carver.

More than 1,000 players participated in the Soccer Marrowthon drive, which took place Aug. 6 at Heritage Oak Park.

The group of students worked with students from Kings High School to collect used soccer equipment for underprivileged children.

They easily surpassed their initial goal of filling and distributing 150 bags and recruiting 150 marrow donors by using social networking, texting and passing out flyers.

?We were excited to do something we love, and hopefully help save a life,? said Carver.
