(AP) ? Thousands of protesters armed with sticks and backed by armed military defectors overran a base of the elite Presidential Guards in Yemen's capital as fighting erupted across much of Sanaa on Monday. The death toll for the worst violence in months rose to nearly 50 in two days of clashes.

The protesters, joined by soldiers from the rebel 1st Armored Division, stormed the base without firing a single shot and seized a large number of firearms, according to witnesses and security officials. The anti-government force used sandbags to erect barricades as they advanced, providing their allied troops with the shelter they needed in case they took fire from inside the base. Republican Guards' troops did not fire at the protesters and eventually fled, leaving their weapons behind.

Violence has flared anew in Yemen in frustration after President Ali Abdullah Saleh dashed hopes raised by the U.S. last week that he was about to relinquish power after 33 years of autocratic rule.

At least 23 were killed on Monday and 26 on Sunday, almost all of them protesters. Dozens have been wounded.

The fall of the base into protesters' hands is a significant development in the seven-month-old uprising against Saleh, who went to Saudi Arabia for medical treatment after a June attack on his Sanaa compound and has not returned to Yemen since.

It signals what could be the start of a final showdown between the Republican Guards, led by Saleh's son and heir apparent Ahmed, and the soldiers of the 1st Armored Division, another elite outfit that has fought in all of Yemen's wars over the past two decades, and their tribal allies in the capital.

The Republican Guards and the Special Forces, also led by the president's son, have long been thought to be the regime's last line of defense and Monday's events could significantly help the protesters' cause against the regime.

The 1st Armored Division, along with its commander, mutinied and joined the protesters about six months ago, dealing a serious blow to Saleh's efforts to cling on to power in the face of the popular uprising.

"It was unbelievable," said protester Ameen Ali Saleh of storming the base on the west side of a major road that runs through the heart of Sanaa. "We acted like it was us who had the weapons, not the soldiers."

To other protesters, the fall of the base may signal the near-collapse of the regime.

"Now the remainder of the regime will finally crumble," said another protester, Mohammed al-Wasaby. "Our will is more effective than weapons. The soldiers loyal to Saleh just ran away."

Yemen's protest movement has stepped up demonstrations in the past week, angered after Saleh deputized Vice President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi last week to negotiate further on a Gulf-mediated, U.S.-backed deal under which he would step down in return for immunity from prosecution. Saleh has already backed away three times from signing the deal.

Many believe the move is the latest of many delaying tactics. Saleh has resisted calls to resign.

Monday's killings took to nearly 50 the number of people killed in two days of fighting in Sanaa and elsewhere in the impoverished nation in the southern corner of the Arabian Peninsula. The fighting marked the most serious outbreak of violence in months, as frustration in the streets again builds over the president's refusal to step down.

Security officials and witnesses said hundreds of protesters headed toward the headquarters of the Special Forces in the south of the city. They said the protesters have stopped their advance about 100 meters (yards) short of the complex, but it was not immediately clear whether they planned to later storm it too.

The officials said 20 of the 23 killed on Monday were on Sanaa's central Hayel street. They included a child, a 14-year-old boy and at least three 1st Armored Division soldiers. Mortar shells thought to have been fired by pro-regime forces killed another two people in the capital, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to share the information.

Scores of protesters suffering gunshot wounds were taken to hospitals in Sanaa, according to Mohammed al-Maqtari, a doctor at a field hospital set up by the protesters. The wounded included soldiers from the 1st Armored Division. Witnesses said the soldiers were involved in skirmishes with the Presidential Guards.

Tens of thousands of protesters demonstrated in Sanaa Sunday to press demands for Saleh to step down. Pro-regime snipers and forces using anti-aircraft guns killed at least 26 of the protesters.

The regime's use of violence has drawn fresh condemnation from the West.

On Monday, the United States, European Union nations and others on the U.N. Human Rights Council used a meeting of the Geneva-based body to urge Yemen's government to stop using force against peaceful protesters and seek a resolution to the monthslong unrest.

The country's foreign minister, Abubakr al-Qirbi, said the government was committed to political reforms, but rejected claims of excessive force by police and pro-government militia, accusing some opposition groups of terrorist activity.

"We have presented evidence proving that many accusation made against security organization are baseless," al-Qirbi told the meeting on Monday. He also rejected calls for an independent international investigation into the crackdown, saying they were "inconsistent with the recommendations calling for dialogue between Yemeni political parties to solve the crisis."

Washington's envoy to the Human Rights Council, Eileen Chamberlain Donahoe, said the U.S. was concerned at "increasingly disturbing reports about violence" and urged the government to rein in the security forces.

"The United States believes that now is the time for an immediate, peaceful and orderly transition," Donahoe said, adding that those responsible for abuses against civilians needed to be brought to justice as part of a reform process.

The United States once saw Saleh as a key ally in the battle against the dangerous Yemen-based al-Qaida branch, which has taken over parts of southern Yemen under cover of the political turmoil in the country. The U.S. withdrew its support of Saleh as the protests gained strength.

In the southern city of Taiz, at least one protester was killed and 15 others were wounded Monday in clashes between anti-regime demonstrators and security forces, according to witnesses. In the southern port city of Aden, three protesters were wounded in clashes with government forces, witnesses there said.

Israelis warily brace for UN vote on Palestinians (AP)

JERUSALEM ? Israelis are greeting the Palestinian bid for U.N. membership with a mix of fatalism and wariness, resigned to the fact that they face a serious diplomatic setback at the world body ? but also increasingly angry and nervous about the country's deepening isolation.

The looming showdown at the United Nations, in which a broad majority of the world is expected to vote symbolically in favor of Palestinian independence, is deepening already strong divisions and tapping into a sense that 63 years after gaining independence, Israel is still searching for its place in the world.

"I think to do it this way is a bad idea," said Yehuda Algrassy, a 28-year-old security supervisor in Jerusalem. "It's just another symbolic step to denounce Israel a little bit more."

The Palestinians are turning to the U.N. in frustration after years of fruitless peace talks that were derailed by violence, Palestinian indecision and gaps that could never quite be bridged.

Most Israelis seem to realize that the likely outcome ? a symbolic Palestinian victory at the General Assembly ? won't change things on the ground. About 500,000 Israelis live in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, captured lands claimed by the Palestinians, and Israel retains firm control over both areas.

Yet there appears to be a widespread sense that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu may have misplayed his hand by not proposing a viable diplomatic plan of his own.

"I don't think Netanyahu is active enough," said Algrassy, who described himself as a member of the prime minister's Likud Party. "He doesn't really show what he means or his real opinion."

The most immediate fear is that mass demonstrations planned by the Palestinians could turn violent, despite Palestinian pledges to keep things peaceful.

"It might raise a new wave of violence for Palestinians, who will see that nothing has really changed," said Yorai Lieberman, a 36-year-old freelance cameraman.

But the deeper concern among many is that Israel is somehow being left behind, particularly at a time when the Middle East is going through major convulsions.

In recent weeks, Israel has suffered a series of high-profile diplomatic setbacks, watching relations deteriorate with Turkey, Egypt and Jordan ? its closest and most important allies in the Muslim world.

These developments, combined with the looming U.N. vote, have fueled a perception that Netanyahu is helplessly watching as the region changes around him.

"Bibi (Netanyahu) himself didn't do enough to show he is serious about peace," said Jonathan Salomon, a 30-year-old financial analyst in Tel Aviv who said he voted for Netanyahu in 2009 elections. The Palestinians' U.N. bid "definitely won't help us," he added.

In a country that has valued presenting a united front to the world, it can be shocking to witness the increasingly corrosive antipathies between religious and secular, rich and poor, and especially between modernist liberals and nationalist settlers determined to cling to the biblical hilltops of the West Bank.

Columnist Avirama Golan wrote in Haaretz recently that Israel is already in an undeclared "culture war."

On Monday, opposition leader Tzipi Livni tapped into these sentiments, accusing Netanyahu of being held hostage to a coalition dominated by hard-line nationalists.

She accused Netanyahu of "sitting passively" and said the government must repair its regional relations. The world "doesn't believe the prime minister of Israel. We are paying the price," said Livni, a former foreign minister.

Netanyahu has tried to portray himself as a victim of sorts, claiming the United Nations is reflexively hostile to Israel and that the Palestinians are the intransigent party.

Addressing his Cabinet this week, Netanyahu showed no signs of bending. "The truth is that Israel wants peace, and the truth is that the Palestinians are doing everything to torpedo direct peace negotiations," he said.

Talks have been frozen for a year over Israeli settlement construction in the West Bank and east Jerusalem ? areas captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war.

The Palestinians plan to ask the world to recognize a state based on the pre-1967 lines.

They plan to first ask the Security Council ? the powerful 15-member body that must approve a statehood request. With the U.S. vowing to veto the measure, the Palestinians are then expected to seek an upgraded observer status ? as a "nonmember state" ? in the larger General Assembly, where victory is virtually guaranteed.

Although the status is largely symbolic, an overwhelming vote in favor might aid the Palestinians in applying for membership in various global organizations such as the International Criminal Court where they can continually challenge Israel.

Elyakim Haetzni, a leading pro-settlement figure, argued that previous Israeli governments have offered the Palestinians generous peace terms that were rebuffed, or even met with violence. "Where do we get the ignorance, hypocrisy, demagoguery, evil and self-loathing?" he write in the Yediot Ahronot daily.

Some Netanyahu supporters, though, believe he must come up with a serious alternative to blunt the international criticism.

Israel Today, a staunchly pro-Netanyahu daily, urged him in a front-page column to consider a new settlement freeze.

"At the current juncture, the question is not to what degree is Israel's position justified but how important is it to prove that it is not the reason for the rift in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict," wrote columnist Dan Margalit.

Ryan Gosling: What's Next After 'Drive'?

Actor will reportedly reteam with director Nicolas Winding Refn for several projects including a possible 'Logan's Run' remake.
By Eric Ditzian

Ryan Gosling's "Drive" didn't exactly zip away from the multiplex this weekend with a hefty box-office haul, grossing only $11 million. That's a respectable sum for a Cannes darling — less high-octane thriller than slow-burning, tension-filled drama — that was always going to have trouble finding a mainstream audience.

But we certainly haven't heard the last of "Drive," which remains likely to be a player come awards season, with Gosling potentially nabbing actor nods and helmer Nicolas Winding Refn looking to pick up other wins on the heels of his Cannes directing award. Gosling, for his part, will have some serious competition ... from himself: The actor's "Ides of March" is also sure to be in the mix come the fall. Whatever happens, Gosling is going to be busy from now through awards season and far, far beyond.

"Ides Of March"

Hitting theaters in October after a festival run this month, "Ides" features Gosling as an idealistic press secretary to a charismatic Ohio governor played by George Clooney, who also wrote and directed the project. The talent in front of and behind the camera made for a buzzy debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, but a crowded field that includes the likes of Steven Spielberg, Stephen Daldry, Woody Allen and Tate Taylor (with his sleeper hit "The Help") leaves an uncertain awards-season path for "Ides."

"The Place Beyond the Pines"

Perhaps we've just got "Drive" on the mind, but this project sounds strangely similar to Gosling's latest. He stars as a motorcycle stunt driver who contemplates committing a crime to benefit his loved ones. At least he looks far different: We recently spotted Gosling on set rocking bleached blond hair and a tattoo under one eye. Co-starring Rose Byrne, Bradley Cooper and Eva Mendes, there's no word yet on a release date or festival debut.

"The Gangster Squad"

Production on Ruben Fleischer's ("Zombieland") third feature kicked off earlier this month with an all-star cast in place, including Gosling, Emma Stone, Sean Penn and Josh Brolin. Set in post-World War II Los Angeles, the story focuses on the city's battles against the infiltration of the East Coast mob. Gosling plays a member of the LAPD — a suavely dressed one at that, as some early set photos made clear.

"Only God Forgives"

Gosling and Refn can't get enough of each other. Luke Evans was initially set to star in this flick about boxing and prostitution in Bangkok, but the actor had to drop out because of his commitment to the two "Hobbit" films. Gosling reportedly stepped in, with shooting expected to begin in November and an eye on a theatrical release in the second half of 2012, according to Variety.

"Logan's Run"

No, seriously: Gosling and Refn can't get enough of each other. They're planning on a remake of this 1976 sci-fi classic, with Gosling playing the starring role of a guy living in a dystopian world where no one is allowed to live past the age of 30. The project has long been in development, with directors like Bryan Singer coming and going. Fingers crossed that Gosling and Refn can succeed where others have fallen short.

Untitled Romantic Comedy

You know the drill by now: Gosling and Refn, together again. Possibly. We know precious little about this project, other than Refn wants to direct, Gosling could star and both men want "Drive" co-star Albert Brooks to pen the screenplay. Hey, we'll bite. "It's a romantic comedy set in New York, which seems like a great place to start," Refn told the Los Angeles Times.

"The Man From U.N.C.L.E."

This one is pure rumor at this point, but reports have suggested Warner Bros. is looking to pair director Steven Soderbergh with a young Hollywood star for this long-gestating adaptation of the '60s-era spy series. Gosling's name has come up alongside those of Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Alexander Skarsgård. Reality? Wish list? Stay tuned.

Jews worried by Vatican gesture to traditionalists

(AP) ? Some Jewish groups voiced concern Friday that the Vatican might be calling into question more than 40 years of progress in Catholic-Jewish relations by reaching out to a group of breakaway traditionalist Catholics that includes a Holocaust-denying bishop.

The Vatican has been working for years to bring the breakaway Society of St. Pius X back into its fold, and this week told its members they must accept some core church teachings if they want to be fully reintegrated into the church. But the Holy See said some expressions contained in documents from the Second Vatican Council could be left open for "legitimate discussion."

The 1962-65 Vatican II meetings brought modernizing reforms to the Catholic Church, including outreach to Jews and introduction of the Mass in the vernacular rather than Latin. The Swiss-based Society of St. Pius X was formed in 1969, opposed to many of Vatican II's reforms.

The Vatican refused to say which core teachings the society must accept to be reintegrated, and which elements of Vatican II documents could be left open for discussion.

A key Vatican II document, Nostra Aetate, revolutionized the Catholic Church's relations with Jews by declaring that Christ's death couldn't be attributed to Jews as a whole. Other Vatican II teachings to which the society objects concern religious freedom and ecumenical relations.

The uncertainty over what is being required of the society provoked unease among some Jewish groups, which issued veiled warnings Friday about the possible impact on Vatican-Jewish relations were Nostra Aetate and other Vatican II teachings to be now considered ripe for discussion.

Abraham Foxman, the Anti-Defamation League's U.S. director, said he was confident that Pope Benedict XVI would require the society to accept the church's "positive teachings" about Jews before being fully reconciled with the church.

"It would be unthinkable for the Vatican to allow a Catholic breakaway sect that includes a Holocaust-denying bishop, Richard Williamson, to be reintegrated into the church while still being allowed to promote anti-Semitism and anti-Judaism," he said in a statement.

Elan Steinberg of the American Gathering of Holocaust Survivors and their Descendants, said there would be "catastrophic effects" on Catholic-Jewish relations if the Vatican didn't require the society to accept the document.

"We mustn't allow the moral imperative of Catholic-Jewish amity to fall victim to a policy of appeasement or blithe expediency," he said in a statement.

Even Rabbi David Rosen, who heads the American Jewish Committee's interreligious affairs office and is a veteran of Catholic-Jewish dialogue, said he was worried about the Vatican's gesture and awaited further clarification.

"If 'Nostra Aetate' and 'Lumen Gentium' (another Vatican II document) are not considered fundamental doctrines of the Church, and it is possible to question them without challenging the authority of the church, then we (and not just Jewish-Catholic relations) are in for a very rough ride ahead," he said in an email.

The society's superior, Bishop Bernard Fellay, has said he would study the two-page document of core church teachings handed over to him by the Vatican and respond.

The German-born Benedict has worked for two decades, as pope and as cardinal, to bring the group back into the Vatican's fold, eager to prevent further schism and the expansion of a parallel church.

Benedict, who has won praise from Jews for his decades of outreach, nevertheless provoked outrage in 2009 when he lifted the excommunication of Williamson, who denied gas chambers were used during the Holocaust. Williamson, Fellay and three other bishops were excommunicated in 1988 after the society's founder consecrated them without papal consent.

The society has six seminaries, three universities and 70 primary and secondary schools around the globe. Aside from the four bishops, it boasts more than 550 priests and 200 seminarians.

HRC Launches New 50 State Outreach Strategy to Expand ...

In an effort to open more loving homes for children across the country, the HRC Foundation is launching a new ?50 state strategy,? with the goal of securing at least one All Children? All Families -recognized adoption agency dedicated to working with LGBT families in every state. The All Children? All Families initiative provides a comprehensive framework for agencies to establish policies and practices that welcome, support and affirm LGBT foster and adoptive parents. ?

With well over 100,000 children nationwide in need of a loving forever home, the issue of adoption by same-sex couples has heated up over the past year.? We have seen attacks on our families by anti-equality forces, despite the fact that all major medical and child welfare organizations, including the American Medical Association, the Child Welfare League of America, the American Psychological Association, and the American Psychiatric Association have all come out in favor of allowing same-same sex couples to adopt.?

HRC is partnering with Equality Virginia, to reach out to the State Board of Social Services, which earlier this year voted to strip legal protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation, religion, age, gender, disability, political beliefs and family status from final rules governing licensed adoption and foster care agencies, but has recently re-opened the public comment period.? Also earlier this year Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed into law SB 1188, which gives preference to married couples in the adoption process ? essentially excluding same-sex couples and narrowing opportunities for single adults who wish to provide a loving home to children.? In a bit of good news, the Arkansas Supreme Court in April upheld a lower court ruling that a law prohibiting adoption by unmarried couples who live together violates the Arkansas Constitution. In Washington, D.C., Representative Pete Stark (D-CA) reintroduced legislation, the Every Child Deserves a Family Act, to address discrimination against qualified, licensed LGBT foster and adoptive families nationwide.

It is really quite simple ? removing barriers to adoption by LGBT families expands the pool of loving and capable parents, opening more forever homes to children who so desperately need them.? To date, ACAF has 50 participating agencies across the country, and has awarded 15 seals of recognition. Learn more about ACAF at www.hrc.org/acaf.
