Syrian state media: Terrorists bomb government buildings in Damascus

According to state-run media in Syria, two car bombs went off in Damascus today. The government is blaming 'armed terrorists.'

? A daily summary of global reports on security issues.

Syria's state-run news agency reports that suicide attackers detonated two car bombs outside government buildings in Damascus Friday, capping off one of the deadliest weeks since Syria's uprising began in March. More than 160 people were killed this week as the government cracked down on what appeared to be attempts to create a rebel stronghold in the northwest.

The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reports that the attack "bears the blueprints of Al Qaeda" (warning: graphic images). Throughout the uprising, the government has blamed much of the violence on "armed terrorists."

The Washington Post reports at least 30 dead and more than 100 wounded from today's bombings, but notes that because the Syrian government still bars foreign journalists from the country and controls media within the country, there is no way to verify government accounts or state media reports. An opposition leader and a regional analyst both expressed doubt about the bombings, telling the Post that there was "little direct evidence of a serious bombing, and that attacks by Al Qaeda and other groups are virtually unheard of in Syria."

Salman Shaikh, of the Brookings Institute in Doha, said that it was difficult to believe that al-Qaeda or an opposition group would have staged such an attack in Damascus.

?Syria doesn?t really have a record of this,? he said. ?The security forces have not lost control of the situation to such an extent that this would seem likely.?

Shaikh also said it seemed suspicious that the media reported the attack so quickly, while pictures showed the car bombs already cleared away. ?I am deeply skeptical,? he said.

Mr. Shaikh said the explosions could actually help the regime by stirring up fears of instability among Syrians.

The bombings targeted state security headquarters and a second security installation, hours before planned demonstrations against an Arab League plan to bring an end to the ongoing violence, The New York Times reports. Members of the opposition speculate that this week's elevated crackdown is intended to cow the resistance into submission before Arab League observers arrive in the country in large numbers.

An advance team of Arab League officials has already arrived in Damascus to set up a framework for the hundreds of observers coming to Syria in upcoming weeks, Al Jazeera reports. Between 30 and 50 are expected to arrive Saturday in the first phase of the mission. The Syrian government is responsible for their protection.

The opposition remains skeptical of the plan, but if observers are able to operate as intended, it might create an opening for protesters without the threat of a brutal government response.

However, in an Al Jazeera report from earlier this week, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem is quoted as saying that the government expects the observer mission to "vindicate" its assertions that the uprising is driven by armed terrorists. "There are many countries in the world who don't wish to admit the presence of terrorist armed groups in Syria." he said. "They will come and see that they are present.... We must not be afraid at all."

Al Jazeera reports that Syrian officials say they have already released more than 1,000 prisoners and pulled the Army out of several cities. The observers are there partially to ensuring continuing compliance with promises to further withdraw Army troops and to release more prisoners, according to The New York Times.

The United Nations now puts the death toll in the uprising at more than 5,000 people, the Associated Press reports.

Thousands visit Bethlehem on Christmas Eve (AP)

BETHLEHEM, West Bank ? Thousands of pilgrims, tourists and local Christians gathered in the biblical West Bank town of Bethlehem on Saturday to begin Christmas Eve celebrations in the traditional birthplace of Jesus.

Visitors gathered near the 50-foot (15-meter) Christmas tree at Manger Square Saturday morning taking pictures and enjoying the sunshine.

The main event will be Midnight Mass at the Church of the Nativity, built over the location where Jesus is believed to have been born.

Israel's Tourism Ministry said it expects 90,000 tourists to visit the holy land for the holiday. Ministry spokeswoman Lydia Weitzman said that number is the same as last year's record-breaking tally, but was surprisingly high considering the turmoil in the Arab world and the U.S. and European economic downturns.

Bethlehem Mayor Victor Batarseh said he hopes this year's celebrations will bring Palestinians closer to their dream of statehood. With peace talks stalled with Israel, Palestinians this year made a unilateral bid for recognition at the United Nations and were accepted as a member by UNESCO, the U.N. cultural agency.

"We are celebrating this Christmas hoping that in the near future we'll get our right to self-determination our right to establish our own democratic, secular Palestinian state on the Palestinian land. That is why this Christmas is unique," Batarseh told The Associated Press.

Bethlehem is today surrounded on three sides by a barrier Israel built to stop Palestinian militants from attacking during a wave of assaults in the last decade. Palestinians say the barrier damaged their economy.

Latin Patriarch Fouad Twal, the Roman Catholic Church's head clergyman in the Holy Land, crossed through a massive metal gate in the barrier, in a traditional midday procession from Jerusalem on Saturday.

"We ask the child of Bethlehem to give us the peace we are in desperate need for, peace in the Middle East, peace in the holy land, peace in the heart and in our families," Twal said.

The number of Christians in the West Bank is on the decline. While some leave for economic reasons, others talk of discrimination and harassment by the Muslim majority.

Christians have even lost their majority in Bethlehem, where more than two-thirds of the some 50,000 Palestinian residents are now Muslim.

The biblical town was bustling on Saturday, however, with Christian tourists and pilgrims.

"This is my first time in Bethlehem and it's an electrifying feeling to be here at the birthplace of Jesus during Christmas," said 49-year-old Abraham Rai from Karla, India.

(AP) ? The entire police force in the major Gulf coast port city of Veracruz was dissolved on Wednesday, and Mexican officials sent the Navy in to patrol.

The Veracruz state government said the decision is part of an effort to root out police corruption and start from zero in the state's largest city.

State spokeswoman Gina Dominguez said 800 police officers and 300 administrative employees were laid off. At a press conference, she said they can apply for jobs in a state police force, but must meet stricter standards for an agency with officers "who are better trained and more committed and who can deliver under our current security circumstances."

Armed marines barricaded police headquarters Wednesday and Navy helicopters were flying above the city where 35 bodies were dumped in September. It was one of the worst gang attacks of Mexico's drug war.

The change was agreed upon Monday by Veracruz Gov. Javier Duarte and federal Interior Secretary Alejandro Poire.

Mexico's army has taken over police operations several times before, notably in the border city of Ciudad Juarez and the border state of Tamaulipas. But Veracruz becomes the first state to completely disband a large police department and use marines as law enforcers. There are about 2,400 marines in the state of Veracruz.

Dominguez said the Navy operations will last only until the state can train more of its own police. Duarte already had disbanded a police force in the state's capital of Xalapa, but in that case state agents immediately replaced city police.

President Felipe Calderon has pushed an ambitious process for vetting all of Mexico's 460,000 police officers. His administration allocated $331 million for 200 cities to train and re-equip municipal police forces.

Governors have complained they lack the resources to ensure their police forces are clean.

Veracruz is a common route for drugs and migrants coming from the south. It was first dominated by the Gulf Cartel, and then its former armed wing, the Zetas, took over after the two split. The state saw a rise in crime this spring after a government offensive in neighboring Tamaulipas scared drug criminals away to Veracruz.

But the dumping of the 35 bodies shocked Mexico as it turned the port into a battleground between the Zetas and a gang aligned with the Sinaloa Cartel, led by Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.

Esterline Revenues Take Off, Earnings Stutter (The Motley Fool)

Esterline Technologies (NYSE: ESL - News), a specialty manufacturer for the global aerospace and defense markets, came out with fourth-quarter numbers that were below Wall Street expectations. Let's take a closer, Foolish look at what's going on with Esterline.

Figuring it out
The company saw its revenue rise by a solid 17% to $502.4 million. Esterline's net profit, on the other hand, declined by a staggering 67% to just $19.4 million mainly because higher sales were offset by acquisition-related costs, coupled with higher interest expenses.

In July, Esterline announced the completion of its acquisition of France-based Souriau Group for around $705 million. According to management, Souriau, a supplier of connector products for rough environments, would enhance the company's business in France and in sectors including defense, aerospace, power generation, rail, and industrial equipment.

Moving ahead with a few speed bumps
Esterline's R&D expenses have risen by 73% from the previous year's quarter, to $30.6 million. However, the R&D efforts seem to have paid off as the company has secured important positions for numerous military aircrafts, such as Boeing's (NYSE: BA - News) P-8, Lockheed Martin's (NYSE: LMT - News) F-35, and Airbus' A400M.

On the commercial aircraft front, Esterline says aircraft production is witnessing an up cycle at customers including Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, and Embraer (NYSE: ERJ - News) on the back of loads of demand for new platforms as well as legacy aircrafts.

However, along with the good news, the company faces a few pain points in the year ahead. One of them relates to Esterline's multiyear contract to upgrade cockpits of around half of the Saudi fleet of C-130 aircraft. A delay being caused by the current operational requirement of these aircraft in the region will delay the deal, worth $25 million, until at least the second half of 2012.

The Foolish bottom line
While demand from the commercial aerospace industry is witnessing a cyclical uptrend, Esterline could face a downtrend in its defense-related business in the next few years due to defense budget cuts in the U.S. However, on the bright side, defense spending would likely increase in countries such as India, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, and Australia, and the company is well-diversified with its commercial aviation segment.

Overall, I think Esterline is a very intriguing aerospace and defense pick for the future, but our analysts have selected a different stock that they believe is poised for tremendous growth in 2012.
