Kidnapped Chinese workers in Sudan freed (Reuters)

KHARTOUM/BEIJING (Reuters) ? Sudanese rebel forces released 29 Chinese workers kidnapped ten days ago in the main oil-producing state of South Kordofan, where the army has been fighting insurgents for seven months, Sudan's foreign ministry said on Tuesday.

The incident had been an embarrassment for the Sudanese government, which is trying to boost investment from China, its main political and trade ally, as it seeks to overcome a severe economic crisis.

Rebels of the SPLM-North said they had taken the construction workers for their own security after a battle with the Sudanese army in South Kordofan, which borders newly independent South Sudan.

But the workers had apparently become caught up in a dispute between Khartoum and rebels who are trying to attract attention to the plight of 417,000 civilians who have fled fighting in South Kordofan and Blue Nile, another Sudanese border state.

Khartoum has restricted access for aid workers and the United Nations in both states, triggering warnings by the United States that a large-scale famine could break out.

The Sudanese foreign ministry said the 29 Chinese workers were flown out from Kauda in South Kordofan by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to neighboring Kenya.

"The Sudanese foreign ministry affirms to the government and people of China that Sudan's government seeks to protect Chinese investments and workers involved in it," a ministry statement said.

SPLM-North rebel spokesman Arnu Ngutulu Lodi and an ICRC official in Khartoum declined to comment.

Top officials of the SPLM-North last week met Chinese officials in Ethiopia.

Both Sudanese border states are home to large communities who used to side with the south during decades of civil war with Khartoum and now complain of marginalization after Juba became independent in July under a peace deal.

The SPLM is now the ruling party in the independent south and denies supporting SPLM-North rebels across the border, as Khartoum says.

China is an ally of both north and south and the main buyer of South Sudanese oil as well the biggest investor in Sudan.

Western diplomats say China has the best chance of defusing tensions between Khartoum and Juba, which are locked in a row over sharing oil wealth, dividing up debt and ending violence on both sides of their joint.

CHINESE PRESSURE

The kidnap was the third abduction of Chinese people in Sudan since 2004 and highlighted the risks to China's expansion in Africa in search of minerals and energy.

Beijing had faced immense pressure to secure the safe return of the abducted workers. State-owned newspapers called for more protection for China's overseas workers as the world's second-largest economy expands its investments around the globe.

The workers belonged to state-owned Sinohydro Corporation, a hydropower engineering and construction company.

A total of 47 Chinese workers were present when the SPLM-North rebels originally attacked. Eighteen fled and one was killed after a rescue attempt, according to Chinese media.

Khartoum counts on China to boost investment as it seeks to overcome the loss of three-quarters of its oil production to South Sudan when it became independent under a 2005 peace agreement ending the civil war with Khartoum.

Most Western firms shun Sudan due to a U.S. trade embargo imposed first in 1997 when Khartoum was hosting prominent militants such as Osama bin Laden.

SPLM-North is one of a number of rebel movements in underdeveloped border areas who say they are fighting to overthrow Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir and end what they see as the dominance of the Khartoum political elite.

Apple in talks on iTV with Canada telecoms: report (Reuters)

TORONTO (Reuters) ? Apple Inc. is in talks with Canada's two biggest telecom companies about becoming partners in the launch of iTV, a device combining features of the wildly popular iPad tablet with those of a television set, a newspaper reported on Tuesday.

Rogers Communications and BCE, parent of Bell Canada, are already testing the device in their labs, Canada's Globe and Mail newspaper reported, citing an unnamed source.

Cupertino-based Apple has neither confirmed nor denied speculation that it was working on iTV, which the industry believes would involve a new device enabling a user to buy and view licensed content, along the lines of the iTunes model.

Even so, the company's late co-founder Steve Jobs revealed to biographer Walter Isaacson he was interested in reinventing the television set. "I finally cracked it," he told Isaacson in his book "Steve Jobs."

The Globe and Mail on Tuesday reported that Apple is eager to find Canadian partners with Internet and wireless experience.

"They're not closed to doing it with one or doing it with two," a source familiar with the talks told the newspaper. "They're looking for a partner. They're looking for someone with wireless and broadband capabilities."

Rogers and BCE offer telephone, Internet and television services to Canadian customers, and both own content that could be featured over an iTV service.

Jefferies analyst Peter Misek had previously suggested Bell and Rogers would make suitable partners, and that U.S. carriers AT&T and Verizon would likely also offer the product in the United States.

Analysts see television as a natural progression for Apple, which has built a massive library of content for its iPhones and iPads. Most expect any future Apple TV product to incorporate gaming, video communication, content delivery, apps and computing capabilities - all controlled by voice commands.

Apple already sells a set-top box called Apple TV that streams available content to a conventional television set and allows the viewer to use an iPhone or other Apple device to control it.

Spokespeople for Rogers and BCE declined to comment on the report. Apple did not respond to a request for comment.

Mustache film festival to be held in Maine (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Move over, Cannes. Maine will be playing host to its first-ever international mustache film festival, part of its annual pageant that celebrates the bristly facial hair.

The festival set for March 30 in Portland will feature short films with storylines that involve mustaches or a main character who wears a mustache, said Nick Callanan, head of No Umbrella Media, a video production company organizing the event.

The idea for the mustache film festival, believed to be the first of its kind, grew out of an annual mustache pageant held locally to benefit arts and cancer research organizations, he said.

This year's 2012 Stache Pag will feature contestants wearing all manner of mustaches, from handlebars to horseshoes, Callanan said. There are also the walrus and Fu Manchu styles, he said.

"It's just about men expressing themselves," he said.

To be considered for the festival, films must be eight minutes or less and have a mustache theme or a main character with a mustache. Callanan said he has received submissions from as far away as Norway.

The films will be screened ahead of the pageant, which has been held annually for five years at bars, bowling alleys and elsewhere, he said.

What began as a gathering of friends mushroomed into an event that attracted some 450 people last year, he said.

The pageant includes categories for various types of mustaches, including the "Magnum, P.I.," named after the amply mustachioed television character played by actor Tom Selleck.

Popular Hollywood movies that would be considered "mustache films" might include "Smoky and the Bandit," starring Burt Reynolds with a thick mustache, "Tombstone" with Val Kilmer or films featuring action star Chuck Norris.

Proceeds from the film festival will be donated to Northeast Historic Film, a film preservation organization, and those from the pageant will be given to an arts support organization called MENSK and a cancer research fundraising group called My Stache Fights Cancer.

Common House Pests According to Exterminators

With careful inspection and assessment, qualified pest exterminators can employ solutions designed to effectively treat infested areas at your home. Such preventive pest control methods efficiently kill pests without compromising family and environment safety. To determine the appropriate pest control methods, exterminators first identify the different pests present in your house. Here are some of the pests commonly present in most American homes.

Roaches

Unlike the German and oriental varieties, American cockroaches are considered the largest species. These roaches are common in warm and damp areas like sewers, basements, crawl spaces, and boiler rooms. Experienced exterminators successfully control these pests when they directly treat attics, cracks, and harborages. German roaches commonly infest moist areas and food sources, while Oriental ones invade floor drains, storm pipes, and dog houses.

Rats and Rodents

Exterminators in Utah recognize three species of rats common in homes: deer mice, house mice, and rats. Deer mice are often found in rural areas and may carry hanta-virus what cause serious respiratory diseases in people. House mice on the other hand are found in urban and suburban communities and may enter your home through vents, screens, and garage doors. Rats share similar characteristics with house mice and are notorious for destroying various things inside the house.

Termites

A reliable exterminator Utah pest control companies employ consider termites as one of the most dangerous house pests in the US. As silent destroyers, termites can cause considerable physical damage and financial costs to a household if left untreated. A comprehensive, personalized, and situation-specific treatment plan to exterminate termites is necessary to protect your home and family from these pests. Experts conduct a termite threat analysis to check if homeowners see any telltale signs of termite presence.

Ants

Carpenter, odorous, and fire ants are three of the most common species in American homes according to experienced exterminator Salt Lake City residents trust. Ants feed on sweet and syrupy food groups and are commonly found in the kitchen, crawlspaces, and under carpeting. Regular treatment is necessary to find and eliminate ant colonies and sub-colonies and provide safe and convenient homes to Utah homeowners. Fire ants in particular pose as a health threat and should be immediately controlled and managed by licensed experts.

Spiders

Poisonous spiders in general pose as a major health threat to people. Black widows, brown recluse, and wolf spiders prefer secluded, protected, and quiet areas like garages, crawl spaces, and basements. Before deciding on the specific pest control product to use, you should first consult established pest control companies and an exterminator Salt Lake City homeowners recommend to understand treatment options in Utah.

20 Million Years Later, Russians Work To Drill Into Lake

Russian researchers in Antarctica are on the verge of piercing a hole through two miles of ice into an ancient lake, untouched by the light of day for some 20 million years. But it'll be a delicate process to break through without disturbing the pristine waters. Guest host David Green speaks with Antarctic researcher John Priscu about the process.

DAVID GREENE, HOST:

Imagine a place on earth where there's been no light, no wind for millions of years. Lake Vostok is one such place. The world's third largest lake, in terms of amount of water, has long been hidden, buried beneath two miles of ice until, perhaps, this coming week. Russian researchers are about to break through that ice.

And to tell us what they might find and what dangers they may encounter, we've brought in John Priscu. He's a researcher at Montana State University who's been tracking the progress of those Russian scientists. And he joins us from Bozeman, Montana.

Professor, welcome to the program.

PROFESSOR JOHN PRISCU: Thank you very much. It's nice to be here.

GREENE: Can you tell us, sort of give us a picture of this lake? I mean I'm imagining something as big as one of the Great Lakes, but just buried under kind of this roof of ice.

PRISCU: Yeah, you're pretty close. Let's choose Lake Ontario.

GREENE: OK.

PRISCU: It's a very large lake in terms of surface area. But importantly, it's a very deep lake, 3,000 feet deep. But, as you say, it's not an easy link to sample; it's under two and half miles of ice.

GREENE: Well, why have these Russian researchers been so determined to get there?

PRISCU: Well, it's an interesting story. The Russian program started drilling in the site for ice cores, to look at paleoclimate and the record of Earth temperature record and gas record. And ice is unique; it has little bubbles of the atmosphere at the time of the snow was deposited at the surface. So, it gives you a record of the atmosphere through time. As you go down deeper into the ice, you get older in time.

But, as serendipity would have it, they got into this very interesting ice when they got over 3,000 meters deep. They lost the climate record, there were no layers in it anymore. And it turned out that the ice that they hit was from this giant lake.

GREENE: So it's sounds like they started digging to test the ice. They figure out that this is actually the liquid lake under there. And what interests scientists at that point? Is it the possibility there might be life, organisms if there's water?

PRISCU: Yes, exactly. When you look out the window of your aircraft as you fly down to Antarctica, you just see this vast expanse of ice as far as your eye can see. And it's about 70 percent of the world's fresh water is frozen there.

GREENE: Wow.

PRISCU: But nobody really ever thought that it was alive. But now, you know, all of a sudden there's these emerging views now that the ice sheet and the sub-glacial environment below it is teeming with life. And I've written a few, papers calling it the largest wetland in our planet is under that ice sheet.

GREENE: Well, what are the risks? I understand that a lot of gases might be built up in that lake. And I guess another question is if there's going to be some sort of explosion or a geyser once they get in there?

PRISCU: That's a good point. The lake is pressurized and the pressure in that lake should be about what we see in a Coke bottle. And you know what happens in the Coke bottle. If you shake it up and uncork the top, the Coke will come shooting out through the top. You know, you can see you can have quite a mess. So it's really important that when the lake water comes up the borehole, it doesn't come up too far, or else it will start degassing, and it could then geyser out through the surface.

GREENE: You know, it's interesting that the Russian scientists have compared this to exploring an alien planet where no one has been before. And one of the fields you study is astrobiology, I mean, life on other planets. Is this comparable to that? I mean could we find life forms that might give you some insight into organisms that live, you know, in outer space?

PRISCU: I think the astrobiological implications of the Vostok study are huge. The icy worlds in our outer solar systems have more habitable space in them than Earth does. We've never been there. We haven't sampled them. But Europa is one of my favorites. And it has this thick ice shelf and a deep ocean under it.

GREENE: Where is that?

PRISCU: Europa is one of the moons of Jupiter.

GREENE: Ah, so there are lakes like this on one of the moons of Jupiter. And so there...

PRISCU: Yeah, they're huge. There are oceans. And so, two things: Vostok and other sub-glacial lakes in Antarctica - there're more than 200 of them - allow us to do, is develop the technology to get there. Secondly, allow us to assess the life that's there. And together, these will allow us to draw hypotheses and develop instruments and experiments for exploration of these outer icy bodies in our solar system.

GREENE: Sounds like if they break through the ice this week, it could be quite an exciting moment. Do you wish you were out there? Do you wish you were out there with them?

PRISCU: I do. I wish I was out there. But I think I would be standing 100 meters away from the boreholes when they break through.

GREENE: All right. Interesting story that will be following. John Priscu is a researcher at Montana State University and he joined us from Bozeman.

Professor, thanks so much for telling us about this.

PRISCU: I thank you very much.

The Initial Research of ATPaseF1? Expression in Colorectal Cancer ...

posted by:

Tumor Research

[Abstract]

Objective To detect the expression of ATPaseF1?in colorectal cancer(CRC) and discuss its relationship with clinical and pathological parameters. To investigate the gene of ATPaseF1?in LoVo human colon cell line and the expression of ATPaseF1?on the cell surface membrane. To research the suppressing effect of anti-ATPaseF1?antibody on reproductive activity and metastasis activity of LoVo cell line. Methods The expression level of ATPaseF1?was examined by Envision and RT-PCR. The expression of ATPaseF1?on the cell surface of LoVo cell line was observed by immunocytochemistry and immunofluorescence. The suppressing effect of anti-ATPaseF1?antibody on reproductive activity of LoVo is evaluated by CCK-8 assay, and the similar effect of antibody on metastasis activity of LoVo is surveyed by Wound-healing assay. Results Immunocytochemistry analyses showed a significant increase in the expression of ATPaseF1?in CRC compared with adjacent normal colorectal tissue and benign samples. Positive ATPase F1?mRNA expression was confirmed by RT-PCR in LoVo cell line. The positive expression of ATPaseF1?on the cell surface of LoVo was observed.ATPaseF1?mAb showed depressant effect on cell proliferation. ATPaseF1?mAb obviously restrains the migration of LoVo cells. Conclusions Our overall findings demonstrate that as a novel tumor associated antigen, ATPaseF1?maybe will turn out a new way to targeted therapy of CRC.
