Holding a gun may make you think others are too

(AP) ? No one knows what led a Florida neighborhood watch captain to shoot Trayvon Martin, a teenager carrying no weapon.

But a new study raises an intriguing question: Could the watch captain have been fooled into thinking the youth was armed in part because he himself was holding a gun?

In the study, volunteers who held a toy gun and glimpsed fleeting images of people holding an object were biased toward thinking the object was a gun.

It's another indication that the brain shapes what we perceive in the world beyond the information that comes in through our eyes, said James Brockmole of the University of Notre Dame, who did the work with psychologist Jessica Witt at Purdue University.

In a telephone interview, Brockmole stressed he had no inside information on the Feb. 26 shooting of 17-year-old Martin, who was shot and killed in a gated community in Sanford, a suburb of Orlando. The neighborhood watch captain, George Zimmerman, said he shot the teen in self-defense because the youth attacked him. The case has drawn outrage and protests, and the federal Department of Justice said Monday it will investigate.

Brockmole said it's possible that Zimmerman's perception might have been skewed by being armed.

Race may have also played a role. Martin is black; Zimmerman's family says he is Hispanic. Past research suggests that people can be more likely to perceive a poorly seen object as a gun if it's held by a black person than by a white person, experts say.

Zimmerman has not spoken publicly. The police report does not mention whether he thought Martin had a firearm. But during his patrol of the neighborhood in his SUV, Zimmerman called 911 and told a police dispatcher that he was following Martin. "We've had some break-ins my neighborhood. ...There is a really suspicious guy."

Then a bit later, he said the youth was approaching and "he's got something in his hands."

In the study which was carried out well before the shooting, undergraduates at Notre Dame and Purdue glimpsed scenes of people holding objects and had to decide quickly whether the object was a gun. The results showed they were biased toward thinking so if they themselves were holding a toy gun, rather than a plastic ball. Just having a gun nearby didn't make a difference, researchers found.

Why is that? Brockmole said people are primed to act in the world rather than just passively see it. So their minds have to contain information both about what they see and what they might do in response. Evidently, each kind of information can influence the other, he said.

He said the work, which is set to be published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, is not intended to support gun control. But he said it suggests that people should know that when they hold a gun "that might change how you're going to interpret what's around you."

Brockmole's findings make sense, said Evan Risko, who studies perception and attention at Arizona State University. "Our perception is influenced by a number of different factors, and that can have important consequences," he said.

Dennis Proffitt, who studies visual perception at the University of Virginia, said there are many reasons why one person might think another is armed, such as if he is worried about his own safety or if he thinks the other person is a robber. The effect of holding a gun oneself "could be part of the story" in Florida, he said.

How the alphabet of data processing is growing: Flying 'qubits' generated

ScienceDaily (Mar. 21, 2012) ? The alphabet of data processing could include more elements than the "0" and "1" in future. An international research team has achieved a new kind of bit with single electrons, called quantum bits, or qubits. With them, considerably more than two states can be defined. So far, quantum bits have only existed in relatively large vacuum chambers. The team has now generated them in semiconductors. They have put an effect in practice, which the RUB physicist Prof. Dr. Andreas Wieck had already theoretically predicted 22 years ago. This represents another step along the path to quantum computing.

Together with colleagues from Grenoble and Tokyo, Wieck from the Chair of Applied Solid State Physics reports on the results in the journal Nature Nanotechnology.

Conventional bits

The basic units of today's data processing are the bit states "0" and "1," which differ in their electrical voltage. To encode these states, only the charge of the electrons is crucial. "Electrons also have other properties though" says Wieck, and these are exactly what you need for quantum bits. "The extension from bits to quantum bits can dramatically increase the computational power of computers" says the physicist.

The new bit generation

A quantum bit corresponds to a single electron in a particular state. Together with his colleagues, Wieck used the trajectories of an electron through two closely spaced channels for encoding. In principle, two different states are possible: the electron either moves in the upper channel or in the lower channel -- which would then only form a binary system again. According to quantum theory, however, a particle can be in several states simultaneously, that is, it can quasi fly through both channels at the same time. These overlapping states can form an extensive alphabet of data processing.

A recipe for qubits

In order to generate quantum bits with different states, the researchers allowed individual electrons to interfere with each other. This works with the so-called Aharonov-Bohm effect: powered by an external voltage, the electrons fly through a semiconducting solid. Within this solid, their trajectory is first forked and then reunited. Thus, each electron flies simultaneously on both possible paths. When the two paths come together again, there is interference, i.e., the two electron waves overlap and quantum bits with different overlapping states are generated.

Controlling electrons on defined paths

Normally, an electron wave moves through a solid body on many different paths at the same time. Due to impurities in the material, it loses its phase information and thus its ability to encode a particular state. To maintain the phase information, the researchers at the RUB grew a high-purity gallium arsenide crystal and used a dual channel proposed by Wieck more than 20 years ago.

How the dual channel works

An electron reaches the fork via two closely spaced channels. These are coupled with each other (tunnel-coupling), so that the electron flies simultaneously on two different paths. The phases of the electron waves are maintained by the coupling. The same dual channel was also used by the team after the electron waves were reunited at the end of the fork. In this way, they produced quantum bits with clear states which are suitable for encoding information. "Unfortunately, not all the electrons take part in this process, so far it's only a few percent" commented Wieck. "Some students in my department are, however, already working on growing crystals with higher electron densities."

Why A Personal Injury Lawyer Is Crucial | Online Success Articles

?

By Paul Malcolm

A personal injury lawyer is a lawyer who provides legal representation to those injured, physically or psychologically, because of the negligence or wrongdoing of another person, company, government agency, or other an individual. Personal injury lawyers are skillful and have more experience with regard to the area of law known as tort law, which includes civil wrongs and economic or non-economic damages to a person?s property, reputation, or rights.

A disability lawyer is therefore trained to handle cases that fall under tort law including: injuries one attains at work, and other accidents, counterfeit products, medical mistakes, or accidents. Injury lawyers have various roles to play for their clients that include both professional and ethical rules and codes of conduct set by law firms that certify them. Once allowed to practice law by the various law schools that approves them, lawyers are legally permitted to file legal complaints, argue cases in state court and offer legal advice to victims of personal injury whenever the need arises.

Disability lawyers are responsible for interviewing prospective clients and evaluating their cases to determine the legal matter, identify the different issues rooted within the plaintiff?s larger problem, and intensely research every issue to build a strong case. The fundamental responsibility of a personal injury lawyer is to help plaintiffs obtain the justice and compensation they deserve for their losses. A Personal injury lawyer must also follow strict standards of legal practice when dealing with his or her clients. The guidelines, however, vary according to different states. Moreover, personal injury lawyers owe their clients a duty of loyalty and confidentiality and must work to protect their clients? best interests.

Some of the basic reasons why you need a personal Injury lawyer are that personal injury lawyers can help their client in winning the case and being compensated. It just feels good to have someone around that is willing to fight for you. When you are injured, getting a lawyer can allow you to deal with your injuries rather than dealing with the added headache and stress of getting legal help. You are already going through a traumatic event that should not be compounded by anymore unnecessary stress.

Before you think of making a move to hire a disability lawyer when an injury occurs it is important to have the following certain basic information in mind as this will help one in understanding the legal procedure entailed and the whole process of the case. A personal injury lawyer should have an honest background. Lawyers are different and some have reputations that are so poor that it will affect your case negatively. It is therefore recommended that you perform comprehensive and thorough research on the lawyer you have chosen. It is also important to know how much your legal representation will cost. This will help you in proper budgeting, as it will avoid misappropriation of funds. Inquire whether he or she has dealt with cases like yours before as the more experience your lawyer will have, the better chance you stand in winning your case.

Been in an accident and looking to find a professional legal team and personal injury lawyers Toronto? Then be sure to visit Win or its Free and find out how you can get what you deserve to heal your pain and suffering.

UT MD Anderson pays tribute to renowned champion of gender equality in science

HOUSTON - Nancy Hopkins, Ph.D., noted cancer biologist and prominent advocate of equality for women in science, is the 2012 recipient of the Margaret L. Kripke Legend Award for Promotion of Women in Cancer Medicine and Cancer Science presented by The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Hopkins, a professor of molecular biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), will deliver the Kripke lecture, Engineering Equity for Women Faculty in Science and Engineering: The MIT Story, at 4 p.m., March 22 in MD Anderson's Onstead Auditorium.

"Nancy Hopkins is truly a legend," said Elizabeth Travis, Ph.D., MD Anderson associate vice president of Women Faculty Programs, which sponsors the award. "At a time when gender equity issues were not discussed in academia, she took the responsibility on her own to shine a light on inequities for women faculty at MIT, resulting in the now famous Hopkins Report.

"Women faculty in academia, including those at MD Anderson, are better positioned to succeed because of her unwavering advocacy. And, our institutions are stronger thanks to her efforts," Travis said. "Walking in Margaret Kripke's footsteps, she's an ideal choice for the Kripke Legend Award. She set the bar high for those of us who follow her lead."

Trailblazer for women in science

Hopkins became widely known as a supporter of equality for women in science when she led MIT's first Committee on Women Faculty in the School of Science. The group's report, which was published in 1999, showed marked disparities between opportunities and treatment for male and female faculty members. This led to numerous improvements in the status and number of women faculty at MIT, as well as increased awareness and similar groups on campuses around the nation.

In 2005, Hopkins walked out of a lecture by the president of Harvard University, Lawrence Summers, when he questioned whether biological differences account for a lower success rate by women in science and math careers.

"I'm profoundly honored to win this award," Hopkins said. "Two things made it special for me. First is my enormous respect for the MD Anderson people involved. Margaret Kripke, and also Liz Travis and her colleagues, are pioneers who opened doors for other women in medicine and science.

"Second is my respect for the institution. I know from my experience working with MIT to advance women in science, that when great institutions such as MD Anderson or MIT bring attention to this issue, their doing so, by itself, overcomes inertia and galvanizes progress. MD Anderson has once again proved itself a leader - in gender equity in addition to its many innovations in cancer research and treatment. I thank MD Anderson for its leadership on behalf of all women in cancer research and medicine."

Major impact on science, equality

Hopkins' research on zebra fish has led to better understanding of the genetic composition of major organs in vertebrates, which may advance treatment for many health conditions, including birth defects and cancer. Her scientific achievements have earned her membership in the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies.

Hopkins was appointed in 2000 as co-chair of MIT's first Council on Faculty Diversity. The committee's work has led to several changes in faculty equality.

"She surely has made significant contributions to the advancement and promotion of women in cancer medicine and cancer science, and far beyond those boundaries as well," said Charles Vest, president, National Academy of Engineering and president emeritus at MIT.

"It's difficult to think of any single person whose tireless efforts have been more directly responsible for so many meaningful policy changes at universities across the country that have benefited so many women in science," said Ben Barres, M.D., Ph.D., professor and chair of neurobiology at Stanford University School of Medicine.
