College Football Recruit Reuben Foster Decommits from Auburn, Georgia in the Mix

Reuben Foster, an elite middle linebacker from Auburn, Ala., decommitted from the Auburn Tigers Friday morning, according to Justin Hokanson of Rivals.com.

Foster told Hokanson that Georgia, LSU, Washington and Miami are now in contention.

Foster made an unofficial visit to Georgia on November 24 for the Bulldogs' game against Georgia Tech. He made his visit with Georgia safety commit Tray Matthews, who is one of Foster's best friends.

The 5-star recruit was committed to Alabama until this summer when he switched to Auburn. He even got an Auburn tattoo on his forearm after his commitment to the Tigers. He started to question his commitment after Gene Chizik was fired as the head coach, mostly because of his relationship? with assistant head coach Trooper Taylor.

Foster told Kipp Adams of ESPN.com, "I am waiting to see what happens with Coach Taylor because my relationship with him is different than a regular coach to player relationship.?

Foster is considered the best middle linebacker in the 2013 class by Scout.com. He had 80 tackles and five sacks in his senior season at Auburn High School.

Chad Simmons of Scout.com says of Foster:

There are not many weaknesses in Foster's game. He is an elite linebacker that attacks the football and he plays with speed from sideline to sideline. He is an instinctive linebacker that can move side to side with great quickness. He doesn't have a lot of experience in pass coverage, so he'll have to improve in that area, but overall, there are not many better. He made an early impact in high school and I expect the same in college.

The Georgia Bulldogs currently have 30 commits for the 2013 class, including five linebackers. They currently have the 11th-best class according to 247Sports.com.

Whichever team picks up Foster will have fantastic talent who can make an immediate impact as a freshman.

It's a good time of year to lose yourself in an absorbing, transportive story that has nothing topical, tropical, stormy, or smarmy about it. Wallace Stegner (1909-1993) may be better known for his 1972 Pulitzer Prize-winner, "Angle of Repose," but it's his last novel, "Crossing to Safety," which quietly celebrated its 25th anniversary this year, that keeps drawing me back. This is the kind of book ? the apt first selection for Will Schwalbe's "The End of Your Life Book Club," ?by the way ? that reminds you why reading is such a wonderful solace and escape.

Achingly poignant and nostalgia-steeped, "Crossing to Safety" is about a close friendship between two couples that spans some forty years, for richer and for poorer, in sickness and in health, till death do them part. Taking its title from a line from Robert Frost's poem, "I Could Give All to Time,"? the novel's concerns are the inexorable passage of time and inevitable loss, but also what one holds onto ? "The things forbidden that while the Customs slept I have crossed to Safety with" ? most notably, memories (both heartwarming and difficult), and love.??

The two couples meet during the Depression on a college campus in Madison, Wisconsin, where both men ? one a wealthy but middling would-be poet, the other a dirt-poor but highly talented aspiring novelist ? are happy to have landed hard-to-come-by academic jobs as instructors in the English department. Their pregnant wives hit it off, and the exuberant, dazzling wealthier couple, Charity and Sid Lang, take Sally and Larry Morgan under their munificent wings, helping them out repeatedly in times of trouble, and exposing them to a world they never knew existed.

The beating heart of that world is Battell Pond, the Lang's "discreet and understated" family compound in Vermont, like something "out of a Hudson River School painting, uniting the philosophical-contemplative with the pastoral-picturesque." It is the antithesis of a trophy property, where even conveniences as basic as telephones are eschewed with a self-imposed austerity. Stegner nails the "simplicity expensively purchased and self-consciously cherished, a naturalness as artificial as the Petite Trianon" that characterize such enclaves of Old Money, rich in simple pleasures. But, as in Poussin's 17th-century pastoral painting, even in Arcadia, there is death.?

Stegner's alter-ego novelist, Larry, narrates the story of this lifelong friendship, which is not without its tensions. The novel opens with the Morgans' return to Battell Pond after what we learn is an eight-year absence. The time is August, 1972, and Larry, whose successful literary career has more than fulfilled expectations, is now 64. He and his wife, long hobbled in body but not spirit by polio, have been summoned back from their retirement home in New Mexico to "the place where during the best time of our lives friendship had its home and happiness had its headquarters."

They have come, despite the hardship of the trip for Sally with her cumbersome leg-braces and crutches, because their dear, imperious, generous, captivating, and exasperating friend Charity is dying of cancer. Entirely in character, she wants to stage her exit with the same rigorous control with which she organized picnics, her husband's disappointing career, her children's lives, and everything else. (The couples' offspring, by the way, are conveniently peripheral through much of the action, left with caregivers for stretches of time likely to astonish modern-day sensibilities.)??

Syrian rebels say Damascus airport is their target

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian rebels fighting to topple President Bashar Assad say the Damascus International Airport is a "legitimate target."

Friday's announcement is a stern warning to the regime and travelers planning to use the airport.

It comes as fighting between Assad's troops and rebels intensified near the airport just south of the capital. Clashes in the area forced the closure of the airport road for the second time this week.

The fighting has also forced the suspension of commercial flights in the past week.

Two fighters operating in the capital's southern suburbs say the rebels are trying to besiege the airport in an attempt to cut military supplies to the regime.

The two spoke on condition of anonymity for security reasons.

Brewer school psychologist co-authors chapter in new reference book

A book recently published to help teachers assist students with psychological disorders has a local connection: a chapter ? No. 10 ? co-authored by Kara G. Wisniewski, Ph.D., NCSP. She is the Brewer School Department school psychologist.

Recently available on Amazon, the book is titled ?Understanding and Managing Behaviors of Children with Psychological Disorders: A Reference for Classroom Teachers.? Published by Bloomsbury and edited by Jered B. Kolbert and Laura M. Crothers, the book ?was written for classroom teachers,? said Wisniewski.

Crothers and Kolbert drew upon professionals from the United States and elsewhere to write specific chapters for the book, which provides teachers with a brief description of various mental health diagnoses and associated behavior-management techniques to help teachers target the problematic behaviors. The American Psychiatric Association?s manual, titled ?The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders,? defines the disorders and describes their related behaviors.

Teachers play a pivotal role in helping to identify and manage problem behaviors, according to Wisniewski. The Bloomsbury book is a detailed resource guide for educators, she indicated.

?Our goal is to intervene as early as possible to help a child,? Wisniewski said. ?Clinical studies have repeatedly shown that the earlier the intervention and treatment, the greater the benefit for the child.?

Wisniewski wrote 40-page chapter 10 in collaboration with psychologists Tammy L. Hughes, a professor at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, and Michael E. Tansy, in private practice in Phoenix. The chapter focuses specifically on children diagnosed with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD). Such children display particular behavior that affects the child?s ability to function socially with other students and to participate meaningfully in a classroom setting.

While pursuing her doctorate at Duquesne University, Wisniewski studied with Rolf Loeber, Ph.D., the principal investigator for the Pittsburgh Youth Study. She wrote her dissertation on boys who exhibit behaviors associated with ODD and CD.

Wisniewski coordinates and provides ?school psychological services for both general and special education students? in pre-K through 12th grade. The Brewer School Department uses a ?team-based approach? that brings together the student, parents, teacher, principal, and school counselor to develop and implement the most appropriate educational program, she indicated.

?The school and home must be working together? for the child?s benefit, Wisniewski said. ?The treatment outcomes are much better with us working as a team.?

Brewer school counselors ?are trained how to work with student behavior issues? and to assist teachers, Wisniewski said. Also available to help students are Penobscot Community Health Care medical professionals assigned to Brewer Community School and Brewer High School. With parental permission, any Brewer student can access the PCHC services.

?We work collaboratively with the staff and school to meet the needs of the student,? she said.

Wisniewski was pleased to contribute to the Bloomsbury book, which ?pulls together the current best practices in supporting the educational outcome for these students,? she said. ?The book offers some helpful hints for more individualized issues a teacher may see in the classroom.?

Wisniewski, Hughes, and Tansy started writing chapter 10 in summer 2011 and finished it last June. ?For me, just being involved in a project like this is a wonderful way to translate research into practice,? Wisniewski said.

Report: Restaurant industry will continue to look for qualified talent ...

-->

According to a new report, it appears as if graduates of cooking schools and those with food and beverage management training and other culinary skills are in high demand in the restaurant industry as business begins to rebound from the economic downturn.

The People Report Workforce Index found that in general employment has been slowly on the rise in the U.S. during the past quarter, with the food service industry adding more than 70,800 jobs during the past three months. However, the report also indicates that the increase in human resource means recruiters and hiring managers will face increased retention and hiring pressures through the end of the year.

"From a perspective of trying to staff a restaurant and obtain the highest tier of talent, it is getting harder," Michael Harms, a senior business analyst at People Report, noted in a press release. "If there was any lingering doubt, this shows the situation from three years ago is gone."

The report also found that most restaurant operators expected higher year-end sales due to the larger holiday spending season.

Food service? managers are responsible for the daily operation of restaurants and other places where food is served. Managers help ensure that all customers are happy with their dining experience.

Israel presses on with contentious settlement plan

JERUSALEM (AP) ? An Israeli military planning committee has unveiled plans for a contentious new West Bank settlement outside Jerusalem, pressing forward with the project in the face of heavy international pressure.

The military says the plans to develop the area known as "E1" were formally presented at Wednesday's meeting. There is now a 60-day period for public objections.

The project envisions construction of 3,000 new homes in a strategic corridor near Jerusalem. Construction would be years away.

Israel had frozen E-1 construction plans under pressure from successive U.S. administrations.

Israel's government revived them last week, after the U.N. General Assembly accepted Palestine as a non-member observer state.

The Palestinians say construction in that area would cut Jerusalem off from the West bank and essentially kill any chance for a future state.

Sony PlayStation 3 claims top spot as Netflix streaming device of choice

As the current gen's console wars wind down in preparation for the coming wave, Sony's still playing a wee bit of catch up. The gaming titan may not be the dominant force it once was, but where its streaming video performance is concerned, the PS3 is an undisputed king. That's according to the company's PlayStation Blog which touts the newly super-slimmed down device as the top platform for Netflix Watch Instantly viewing, even outstripping PC usage. Netflix's CEO Reed Hastings credits the console for being an early adopter testing ground, citing the many experimental updates (i.e., full 1080p with Dolby 5.1, second screen controls and subtitles) it's delivered as firsts to users of the PlayStation 3 over the years. And the company will continue to innovate on the platform, pointing to the novel "Max" voice UI that's currently PS3-only. In all, it's surprising, albeit welcome news given the massive install base of Netflix-capable competitors like the Wii and Xbox 360, not to mention a host of other connected devices. You can check out the full release at the source below.

Galaxy Gaming Publishes Open Letter to Bank of America OTCBB ...

LAS VEGAS, Dec. 4, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Galaxy Gaming, Inc. (OTC:GLXZ), the world's second largest developer, manufacturer and distributor of casino table games and enhanced casino systems, today published an open letter in the Charlotte Observer to Brian Moynihan, CEO of Charlotte-based Bank of America, urging Galaxy's former financial partner to cease its destructive litigation strategy and instead work to foster honorable consensus.

"We took this step because what Bank of America is doing through its lawsuits against our company is truly unfortunate, a rash and reckless decision that won't do anything to resolve our differences and let both sides get back to growing their business," said Robert Saucier, CEO of Galaxy Gaming.

The letter is in response to a lawsuit Bank of America filed against Galaxy in October.?The dispute stems from a commercial loan made in 2007 to a predecessor company that sold its assets to Galaxy.?As part of the purchase agreement, Galaxy agreed it would make payments directly to Bank of America on the prior companies loan, but Galaxy never intended nor agreed to assume the loan.?When the Las Vegas real estate market crashed, the collateral for the loan significantly decreased in value and Bank of America subsequently called the loan and demanded to be paid in full, even though Galaxy faithfully made all payments.?Bank of America then sued Galaxy for the full amount of the loan.?

"Needless to say, our loyalty was not returned," said Mr. Saucier.

The open letter mentions that Bank of America itself is being sued by the Department of Justice for more than $1 billion and accused of serious crimes by federal prosecutors.?This may explain why Bank of America has set aside as much as $42 billion in company assets strictly for litigation purposes.?Also mentioned is the fact that Mr. Moynihan's background is not banking or finance, but law and litigation.

"Menacing lawsuits can only contribute to suppressing potential growth, destroying good jobs and stifling the entrepreneurial spirit that B of A is supposed to support," said Saucier.?"Litigation ? whether against us or against B of A ? should always be a last resort and never a first option."

Opting to pursue agreement and not attack, Saucier is optimistic that the two companies ? despite their difference in size ? share an identical commitment to core business vales.

"I remain hopeful that Mr. Moynihan and his team at Bank of America will choose to remember and reassert one of their company's own "Core Values": We are aware that our decisions and actions affect people's lives every day.

The Open Letter may be viewed here: Galaxy Gaming website (www.galaxygaming.com) or here: Charlotte Observer website?(http://t.co/YwHh57pC)
