Reds walk off vs. Mets, win 4th straight

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:54 p.m. ET Aug. 14, 2012

CINCINNATI (AP) - Jay Bruce hit a three-run homer in the ninth inning and the Cincinnati Reds won their fourth game in a row, beating the New York Mets 3-0 Tuesday night.

The NL Central leaders and the Mets were a combined 0 for 18 with runners in scoring position before Bruce connected with no outs.

Brandon Phillips drew a leadoff walk in the ninth from Manny Acosta (1-3), New York's fifth pitcher. Ryan Ludwick followed with single that sent Phillips to second.

Left-handed reliever Josh Edgin came in to face the lefty-hitting Bruce, who sent a drive into the left-field seats. It was Bruce's 23rd homer of the season and second in the Reds' last two games - both off lefties.

The Reds' defense, which went into the game tied for the best overall fielding percentage in the league, also saved at least one run in the ninth. After appearing to misjudge the ball, center fielder Drew Stubbs made a backhanded shoetop catch of Ruben Tejada's sinking liner with two outs and runners on second and third.

Jose Arredondo (5-2) wound up with the win.

Both teams went into the game after getting Monday off. The Mets opened a six-game road trip, while the Reds started a grueling stretch of 17 games in 16 days.

Starters Mat Latos of the Reds and Chris Young of the Mets spent most of their nights pitching into and out of trouble. In all, the clubs stranded a total of 24 runners on base.

Young allowed eight hits and four walks and threw a wild pitch in 5 2-3 innings.

Latos gave up five hits and two walks in seven innings. He was aided in the fourth when Phillips, the Gold Glove second baseman, made a leaping backhand stab of Young's line drive up the middle with the bases loaded and two outs.

NOTES: Mets RHP Tim Byrdak expects to have surgery on Sept. 5 to repair a torn anterior capsule in his right shoulder. Byrdak went on the disabled list on Aug. 2 and will miss the rest of the season. ... Reds RHP Homer Bailey watched fellow Texan Andy Roddick play in the Western & Southern Open in suburban Cincinnati on Tuesday. ... Reds manager Dusty Baker confirmed that the Reds will call up a pitcher to start one of the games of Saturday's day-night doubleheader against the Cubs. The Reds are the only team in the majors this season to use just five starting pitchers.

Calif. authorities investigating break-in say MMA fighter 'Mayhem' Miller found nude in church

MISSION VIEJO, Calif. - Mixed martial arts fighter and reality show host Jason (Mayhem) Miller was in jail on suspicion of burglary Monday night after deputies responding to reports of a break-in said they found him naked inside a Southern California church.

Miller was being held on US$20,000 bail and was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday, Orange County jail records showed.

The pastor at Mission Hills Church in Mission Viejo called authorities when he found evidence of a break-in Monday morning, including books and CDs that were strewn about, white powder on the floors and missing boards from a previously broken window, sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino said.

Deputies arrived and said they found Miller naked on a couch.

"When they asked him his name he responded, 'Mayhem,' " Amormino told the Orange County Register.

They also found evidence that Miller had set off fire extinguishers inside the church, Amormino said. Miller was coherent and co-operated with authorities as he was arrested.

Deputies did not know if Miller had hired a lawyer, and phone listings for Miller or a representative could not be found. A message left on his official Facebook page was not immediately returned.

Miller, a popular professional middleweight in the mixed martial arts world, has fought for several organizations including UFC, but has lost three of eight fights.

He also hosted the MTV show "Bully Beatdown," a reality show where bullies are challenged to take on professional MMA fighters for a chance to win money.

Before his last fight on May 27, Miller said he would retire if he was defeated, and went on to lose a lacklustre decision to C.B. Dollaway

Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act Extended to 2013 ...

Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief ActThe Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act of 2007 created a special exemption in the IRS tax code to forgive mortgage debt incurred from foreclosure, short sale or deed in lieu of foreclosure.

The mortgage debt relief extension is big news for home owners currently are underwater on their loans, delinquent on mortgage payments and possibly heading toward foreclosure, short sale or deed-in-lieu of foreclosure.

The IRS tax code states that all forgiven debt is treated as ordinary income, and taxed at applicable rates.

Here?s and example of what that means to homeowners possibly facing challenges with mortgage debt:

Let?s say a home owner is forced to move because of work. ?You can?t sell your current home because it?s upside down, you can?t afford to pay rent on a new place and keep up on the mortgage at the same time. ?This is what it could look like:

  • Your current mortgage is $300,000, your home short sells for $200,000.
  • The $100,000 loss from the short sale is reported to the IRS as income.
  • If your current federal income tax rate is 25%, you now have a $25,000 tax bill on your hands.

In 2007, the Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act of 2007 was passed and allowed this debt to be exempt and not taxable. ?The scheduled expiration of this program is the end of 2012.

On August 2nd, the Senate Finance Committee narrowly passed a bill proposing to extend the Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act through the end of 2013.

Also Included in the bill is a proposal to extend the mortgage insurance tax exemption and several?energy-efficiency tax credits for remodeling and home construction.

The bill, passed by the Senate Finance Committee, now goes to the full Senate for a vote as early as next month.

With a Presidential election only months away, this is no doubt going to be political football as the incumbents look to justify their value, and new players try to hit the ground running with a fresh round of relief for struggling homeowners.

Whether this passes next month, or if it doesn?t get signed until after the election, I am hopeful and fairly confident that we will see extensions to these programs.

Feedback can have a negative impact on performance

ScienceDaily (Aug. 14, 2012) ? People who give positive encouragement and constructive criticism could be wasting their breath according to the latest research from a psychology expert at Queen Mary, University of London.

The study, published in the journal Frontiers in Neuroscience, found that when people received either positive or negative feedback about their performance on complex decision-making tasks, it made their decision making worse.

Study author Dr Magda Osman explained: "The kind of task people had to perform was difficult and demanding. So, when people received positive or negative feedback, it overloaded them with too much information and distracted them from making a good decision.

"We found that people's performance got worse when they had to make sense of the feedback they were given while also performing the main task.

"The role of feedback is overemphasized. People typically think that any form of feedback should improve performance in many tasks, and the more frequently it is given the better performance will be.

"However what needs to be considered is how complex the task is in the first place, because this will determine how much feedback will actually interfere with rather than facilitate performance."

The study involved about 100 people who were given the task of choosing how best to either predict or control the state of health of a baby, revealing that feedback can play a negative role in a particularly complex decision-making scenario.

However Dr Osman said this type of finding can be generalized and applied to a variety of other complex situations.

"The introduction of smart energy meters into the home to monitor the amount of energy you're consuming seems like a nice 'green' idea to help you consume less energy, but the complexity of the feedback people receive may not necessarily help them to reduce their energy consumption," she said.

"If the energy meter keeps changing and people are unable to track what appliances are on, how could they possibly learn how to lower their energy consumption?

"People are already being bombarded with high levels of complex information with the influx of new technology into our lives and the increasing reliance on information from the smorgasbord of apps we have at our fingertips. It is bound to take its toll on our ability to make good choices in difficult decision-making situations."

Dr Osman warns that people in management positions need to be aware of the type of feedback they are providing to their staff.

"We have shown that feedback really doesn't help people who are making complex decisions. People in management positions need to give their staff more time to analyse and evaluate things in detail when dealing with difficult situations so they can come up with solutions without any distractions in order to get the best out of them."

Dr Osman added that her findings disagree with Nobel prize winner Daniel Kahneman who writes in his popular book 'Thinking, Fast and Slow' that feedback is good, and is also at odds with the authors Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein whose book 'Nudge: Improving Decisions about Health, Wealth and Happiness' was named Best Book of the Year by The Economist.

"My work shows that feedback alone is not enough to ensure success in decision making. I may not be popular for my research into the role of feedback in complex decision-making tasks but I hope it will make some people think twice about whether they could potentially hinder people's performance with the feedback they provide," she said.

Kuwait opposition attacks plan to change election law

DUBAI (Reuters) - The Kuwaiti government's efforts to change the electoral law before a vote expected this year amount to a "coup", opposition politicians said on Sunday, calling for political reform and full parliamentary democracy.

Kuwait, an OPEC member and U.S. ally in the Gulf, has been gripped by a political crisis that has hindered much-needed economic reforms. The crisis revolves around a row between the elected parliament and the appointed government led by Al Sabah ruling family.

On Sunday, Kuwait's emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah urged unity, in comments that appeared aimed at ending the political bickering.

In June, the constitutional court effectively dissolved a parliament dominated by opposition Islamists and reinstated the previous, more government-friendly assembly. The dispute deepened last week when the government decided to refer the electoral system to the constitutional court.

"The majority bloc views what is happening as a real coup by the political authority against the constitutional system, a coup aimed at seizing the rights of the nation through the constitutional court," opposition politicians said in a statement released on Sunday after a meeting.

The reinstated parliament has failed twice in the past two weeks to swear in a new government as lawmakers boycotted the sessions, increasing the chances of a new election being called. Analysts say this could be after the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which ends around August 18.

The statement accused the government of dragging the judiciary into a political dispute over the boundaries of parliamentary constituencies that helped the opposition win a majority in elections in February.

"The political authority, through the constitutional court, is trying to create a legislative vacuum that will allow it ... to have control over the legislative decision-making process with the aim of controlling ... the outcome of any future parliamentary election to monopolize power," said the statement, published on the www.alaan.cc news website.

The opposition statement urged the supreme judicial council and the constitutional court not to hear the case. "Confronting the scheming of the authorities is the responsibility of the whole Kuwaiti people," it said.

EMIR WEIGHS IN

Kuwait has long prided itself on having a fully elected legislature and lively debate - unique in a region governed by autocrats who tolerate little dissent - but the ruling al-Sabah family still holds a firm grip on state affairs.

The most important cabinet posts are held by family members and the 83-year-old emir reserves the right to dissolve parliament at will.

On Sunday Sheikh Sabah blamed "incorrect political practices assumed by some for impeding development".

"We will not allow the continuation of such method and we will all work together ... on pushing forward with the development," he said in a televised speech.

"The given freedom and right of speech should not be used in a way that causes discord and harms the social fabric built by our fathers and forefathers," he said.

Opposition politicians said the response to the government plans was to mobilize popular opposition and renew demands for political reforms. "The opposition bloc sees that the popular effort should ... seek to revive the constitutional emirate to achieve an elected parliamentary government," it added.

Kuwait has not experienced the kind of mass popular uprisings that have swept the Arab region since last year, but tensions have grown between the cabinet and opposition lawmakers pushing for a say in government. The country has seen eight governments come and go in just six years due to bickering between the parliament and cabinet.

Olympics-British gold rush silences gripes over cost

* Government says Games will raise more than they cost

* Olympics to provide only fleeting boost to economy

* London enjoys boost to battered image

LONDON, Aug 12 (Reuters) - Britain is counting its medals

rather than adding up the bill after an acclaimed Olympic Games

silenced a debate - for now at least - about whether it was

worth nine billion pounds ($14.2 billion) of public money.

The price was more than double what was forecast when London

was named host seven years ago, never mind the government mantra

that the Games were "delivered on time and under budget".

Prime Minister David Cameron, desperate to revive a

recession-hit economy, has made London 2012 a centrepiece of his

commercial diplomacy to sell UK Plc to visiting business chiefs.

The government says the Games will deliver economic benefits

of 13 billion pounds in coming years - meaning they will more

than pay for themselves - and brushes aside scepticism about the

long-term effects of hosting major sporting events.

Yet away from the Games, the news has been bleak.

The central bank has warned the economy will not grow this

year, the governing coalition partners are at loggerheads and

Standard Chartered has become the latest London bank

caught up in scandal.

Economists say the Games should help Britain's economy to

return to growth fleetingly in the three months to

end-September. Sales of tickets and T-shirts and spending by

Games organisers will provide a short-term boost likely to fade

fast.

After that, it becomes harder to distinguish the Olympic

effect from what is happening in the broader economy.

"We're all having a great time but, similar to most parties,

there's going to be a hangover," said Georgios Kavetsos of the

London School of Economics.

"Mega events, such as the Olympics, do not significantly

increase tangible outcomes such as economic growth, tourism,

employment or wages," he added.

However, he said London might have a positive impact on

British society.

"There is limited evidence on whether they might have

intangible benefits, such as happiness and the promotion of

healthy living."

PROMOTING LONDON

The Games have certainly been a public relations boon for

capital and country, helping to repair the damage done by images

of youths burning and looting in English cities a year ago.

"London has looked very professional and slick on the world

stage," said Sara Parker, London director for the CBI business

lobby group.

"What the last two weeks have done is to show the diversity

of what British business can do."

Britain went through a crisis of confidence just before the

Games began, fearing that transport and security problems could

make it a laughing stock on a global stage.

Those concerns have proved unfounded. The 70,000 Olympic

volunteers ensured all went smoothly and venues in the centre of

London illustrated the city's ancient and modern appeal.

"I was expecting things to be well organised but the warmth

of the people has surprised me," said Manuel Parga, chief

financial officer for the Madrid team bidding to host the

Olympics in 2020.

"I lived in Paris for five years and used to think it was

the real capital of Europe but now it feels like London is the

place."

It is easy to get caught up in the giddy atmosphere in

London, but the Olympics have been a summer sideshow for many.

"The thing about the London games is that everything seems

to have gone well," said Tyson Barker, head of transatlantic

relations at the Bertelsmann foundation in Washington.

"And that means no one is talking about it. If it had been a

fiasco it would be a different matter."

GOLDEN TONIC

Britons now talk of little but sport. The country has

enjoyed its most successful performance at an Olympic Games for

over a century, a tonic during seven lean years of austerity.

The Games have also helped transform what was long a

forgotten and polluted corner of East London.

Stratford, home to the Olympics and one of the poorest parts

of the capital, now boasts Europe's largest urban shopping

centre and excellent transport links to the rest of the capital.

The apartments where the athletes have lived for the past

few weeks will be converted into flats for sale next year.

Athletes will return to the Olympic stadium in 2017 for the

world championships and Britain is also bidding to hold the

world cycling championship in the velodrome in 2016.

Local soccer team West Ham United are the best known of four

potential tenants for the stadium, built at a cost of 430

million pounds, and would give the area a focal point.

Manchester City moved into the stadium built for the 2002

Commonwealth Games and have become Premier League champions

thanks to an infusion of cash from Abu Dhabi.

West Ham's "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles" theme tune rang

around the arena in one of the more parochial moments from Danny

Boyle's opening ceremony. That may have pointed the way towards

a viable sporting legacy for the venue.
