?We?re not daredevils,? says Tome nativeJay Torrez looks forward to burning up. The 32-year old movie stunt man and fight choreographer, who recently appeared in ?Sons of Anarchy,? says he ?had to work my way up to a full-body fire burn,? which he?ll perform on a closed set at Santa Fe Studios in early January.

Bathing in flames is a dangerous way to make a living, but it is just part of Torrez?s job.

?We?re not daredevils. We are precision calculated-risk takers,? says the Tome native. ?I?ve done partial burns before, but smoke and carbon dioxide is the worst danger, so I?ve been training in Navy Seal breathing techniques.?

Torrez, from a family of ?Spanish cowboys,? relishes the thoughtful toughness demanded by his profession. He doesn?t mind the pay either.

?We do get paid well,? he says, smiling. ?But you don?t just go to stunt school and start working in films. It?s not that simple.?

Torrez tells how he joined the elite ranks of stunt actors.

?I graduated from Concordia University in Irvine, California. Some surfer buddies became stunt doubles, so I thought my martial arts background might help me. Only one of my 100 [cold] calls was a hit. That was to Gene LeBell in North Hollywood. Gene LeBell put me around some of the top stunt guys. Then I had to negotiate my SAG card.?Torrez explains that in the world of stunt actors, ?Who you know? is vital.

?I got adopted into a stunt family? the only way you can work in this business. Stunt coordinators hire you from the families. Those veteran stunt people in Los Angeles taught me a lot about life.?

Torrez learned horse falls, saddle falls, high falls and trust, and he doesn?t flinch at type-casting.

?Hispanic guys play terrorists a lot. I have a beard now to play a terrorist. Then they?ll shave me so I can play a Marine. I play cartel guys, too. In the movie ?Machete? I worked for Eric Norris who brought me to Austin to work for director Robert Rodriguez and Jessica Alba?s stunt double. By ?coming back to life,? Torrez says, he has increased his on-screen time and job security. ?In ?Machete,? I think I died six or seven times!?

Focus is essential, says Torrez. ?Keep your mouth shut. Don?t get starstruck by Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg or Martin Scorsese on the set.?

Torrez got his ?Sons of Anarchy? role from series creator Kurt Sutter, who remembered Torrez?s work on ?The Shield? series.

Torrez loves New Mexico film making after years in Hollywood.

?I got onto ?Hamlet 2,? then ?In Plain Sight? and most recently, ?Two Guns.? We have the best crew here, and you get shots here that you can?t get anywhere else in the world.?

?Torrez will speak at the New Mexico Film Festival at UNM Valencia Campus on February 8.

Globes winners shake up Oscar predictions

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

One thing's for sure: Ben Affleck won't be picking up a best director Academy Award to pair with the Golden Globe he won Sunday night for "Argo." Although the Hollywood Foreign Press Association gave him its top directing prize, the members of the Academy didn't even include Affleck on their list of nominees. (Conventional wisdom is that Steven Spielberg, by far the biggest name on the Academy's list, will take that prize.)

AP file

Ben Affleck doesn't even have a shot to repeat his best director win at the Oscars -- he's not nominated.

But Affleck's film, "Argo," still could win best picture. Some critics say that's unlikely, that even though best picture and director are completely separate categories, Academy voters will only support a best picture winner whose director they liked enough to also nominate. (Three films have won best picture without a best director nomination. "Driving Miss Daisy" was the last to do so, back in 1989.)

If the no-best-picture-without-a-director-nomination rule holds, Spielberg's "Lincoln" is where your smart money goes. The four other films whose directors were nominated are longshots at best for best picture, much as arthouse-goers might love "Beasts of the Southern Wild" or "Amour."

Many awards watchers went into the Globes expecting a "Lincoln" sweep. Not only did that not happen, the presidential drama won only one award, for Daniel Day-Lewis as best actor. That makes it time to look at the best picture nominees with fresh eyes. Out of nine, there are only three real contenders -- "Lincoln," "Argo" and "Zero Dark Thirty."

"Zero Dark Thirty" had early momentum and stunning reviews, but has made more headlines recently for its torture controversy (and host ?Amy Poehler's zinger about director Kathryn Bigelow's ex-husband James Cameron). The lengthy and engrossing film could still pull out a win, but you're more likely to see star Jessica Chastain repeat her Globes win for best actress instead. Sorry, Jennifer Lawrence -- your Globe win for best actress in a motion picture musical or comedy for "Silver Linings Playbook" probably won't be enough to dethrone Chastain.

If you buy into the stereotypes about the Academy voters, "Argo" would seem to have a decent best-picture shot. The Academy clearly likes to reward films about their own industry -- witness moviemaking themed "The Artist" scooping up five Oscars in 2012. And "Argo" shows Hollywood at its best, as two of its own (played by John Goodman and Alan Arkin) craft a fake movie to help a CIA specialist (Affleck) rescue six Americans hiding in Iran. It's quite possible that the Oscars could mimic the Golden Globes this year and reward the film, even without Affleck being nominated.

But then there's "Lincoln." It too features many of the trademarks of films the Academy loves to honor. Epic and sweeping, it's the kind of big-issue picture Spielberg does so well, the sort of movie schools will likely show to history classes for years to come. If the Academy can't resist rewarding Day-Lewis and Spielberg, it's conceivable voters could choose not to spread the wealth around and dub "Lincoln" best picture too.

"Les Miserables" could contend, but it's more likely that Anne Hathaway will take home the best supporting actress award, mimicking her Globe win, and the musical's fans will have to be content with that and perhaps some of the minor awards it's nominated for (it's up for eight). Some critics are rooting for Hugh Jackman's "Les Mis" performance to rise up and knock out Day-Lewis in the best actor category, but that still seems unlikely, all the more so after Day-Lewis' Globes win.

John Shearer / AP

"Django Unchained" seems unlikely to do as well at the Oscars as it did at the Globes. Quentin Tarantino, who seemed genuinely surprised to win the Globe for screenwriting, isn't up for best director. Christoph Waltz claimed the Globe for best supporting actor, and he and "Argo's" Alan Arkin will likely duke it out for that same title Oscar night. But the Academy likes to be seen as Dignified and Serious, and Tarantino's artsy flying blood splatters may not appeal to its voters.

"Life of Pi" earned 11 Oscar nominations, second only to "Lincoln," but no one is giving it much of a shot to score big with the Academy, except in minor categories. (It won for best original score at the Globes.)

Winners aside, the sometimes loopy Globes have established themselves as a surprisingly tough act for big-brother Oscar to follow. It'll be interesting to see if Academy Awards host Seth MacFarlane?can even come close to matching the overwhelmingly positive reviews Globes hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have collected. Fey and Poehler have a more mainstream fanbase and they aren't the envelope-pushers that the "Family Guy" creator is. And Angelina Jolie will have to show a lot more than leg for anything in the rest of the show to rival the buzz garnered by Cecil B. DeMille award winner Jodie Foster's confusing but endearing six-minute speech.

Ethiopian police says Qaida terror cell arrested

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) ? Ethiopia's spy agency says that security forces have arrested 15 people alleged to be members of a terror cell linked with al-Qaida.

The spy agency says military training manuals, videos and weapons were seized from the suspects. The agency announced the arrests late Wednesday.

Authorities said the suspects were trained by al-Shabab militants in neighboring Somalia and Kenya. They alleged the group was planning to launch attacks based in Ethiopia's Somali and Harara regions.

On Tuesday the country's federal high court convicted 10 people on similar terror charges.

Feeling Guilty About Inappropriate Sexual Feelings | Ask the Therapist

As a boy my grandfather took pictures on me naked and in my underwear and had lots of verbal abuse from my father. I don?t remember any other abuse, but all I remember is undressing in front of my grandfather while taking pictures of me. I don?t blame my father for his verbal actions as his father probably did worse to him. I?ve come to understand a humans? actions and why things are ?passed on?. I came to realize my condition when I was maybe 14 or 15. I considered suicide at 16 and was very close to it. Making a date, time, and place was as close as I got, fortunately. I?m 23 now. Haven?t committed a crime. NEVER have touched a boy and NEVER have thought about doing it. In fact, I don?t even have a traffic ticket. I?m around many children and DO NOT have the urge to do anything rational. I?m honest, kind, and willing to go the extra mile to help others. I know my condition needs attention and I?m willing to get help so I can live a happier life.

My condition is not only an attraction to younger boys around 9 or 10 but I?m also attracted to disposable diapers. Specifically younger boys wearing diapers. I?ve always been interested in diapers, looking at the packages in the diaper aisle at the grocery store as a child. Going to the store when I was old enough to buy them. Secretly wearing them on my own time. Maybe it was because I wet the bed as a child? I?m not sure, but nothing has changed for me and that?s a problem. Not the diapers but the underage part. I can live with diapers.. I can?t live with the fact that I am attracted to younger boys. I?m beginning to think suicide is the right answer. I so want a normal life with a normal relationship. Maybe have kids some day and pass on my human experiences. I just don?t see it happening. Feelings are strong and chiseled into my brain. There is no way of making them disappear. I?m very reserved and sad all the time. It?s not natural and wish for a solution?

Is there anything you suggest for me. I feel like these feelings I have will be the death of me soon if I don?t act.

A. Many people your age or older are confused about sexuality. They don?t understand arousal and why they are attracted to certain people or objects. If you were to study human sexuality, you?d see that throughout history people have been aroused by unusual things.

One cannot consciously control what arouses them. If so, then it would be easy for a homosexual person to be heterosexual or for a heterosexual person to be homosexual.

Many people are aroused by and even masturbate to fantasies of things that they would never do. Most fantasies go no further than the confines of the mind.

Individuals who have been sexually abused as children often repeat that abuse as adults. Though you are attracted to young boys, you have never abused or harmed anyone. That is important to acknowledge. It is very commendable.

This problem falls in the realm of sex therapy. Sexual therapists study and deal with complex sexual issues. You should make an appointment with a sex therapist. Sex therapists are not judgmental. They understand the range of human sexual feelings. Sex therapy is very effective.

The guilt about your feelings is making you depressed. It is likely causing your suicidal thoughts. If you feel that you might harm yourself, then go to the hospital immediately.

Almost everyone who has attempted suicide and survived was glad that they had survived. Why? Because later their problems were solved. Your problems can also be solved. You are an excellent candidate for sex therapy. I hope you will consider it. Please take care.

Jim Harbaugh chose to coach 49ers over Dolphins

Two years ago, both the Miami Dolphins and San Francisco 49ers wooed Jim Harbaugh to be their next coach.

The Niners won that courting competition and landed their high-profile man, luring him away from nearby Stanford and giving him a $25 million, five-year contract. And Harbaugh delivered immediately by taking his new team to the NFC championship game and oh-so-close to a Super Bowl as a rookie NFL coach.

Now, he has his 49ers (8-3-1) poised for another postseason run next month, with Miami (5-7) next up on the schedule come Sunday at Candlestick Park.

As rarely as these teams see each other being on opposite coasts and playing in different conferences, they certainly have pursued some of the same faces - most notably, of course, being Harbaugh.

Then, last spring, 49ers quarterback Alex Smith flew to South Florida for a visit with the Dolphins during a time when San Francisco's brass explored the possibility of signing Peyton Manning.

Manning wound up in Denver, Smith stayed put on a new three-year deal, while Miami drafted Ryan Tannehill. Smith has since lost his starting job to Colin Kaepernick after suffering a concussion against the Rams on Nov. 11.

Dolphins coach Joe Philbin didn't want to get into the details regarding how far talks went with Smith before he ultimately re-signed with San Francisco.

"We had a great visit and I'll leave it at that," Philbin said. "Any relationship takes two sides to tango and I think you should certainly ask him about that, but I have nothing but good things to say about him. I really enjoyed our visit."

Miami's immediate future - and long-term success, too - is riding on Tannehill's ability to get a stagnant offense going down the stretch for a Dolphins team determined to finish strong and avoid a fourth consecutive losing season after overhauling the operation heading into 2012.

"You can't win games consistently only scoring 19 points," Tannehill said. "That's a big focus of ours, to find a way to get more points on the board whatever way it is. We have to find a way."

He will face pressure all day from NFL sacks leader Aldon Smith as well as Justin Smith.

Both teams boast stingy, opportunistic defenses and mobile young quarterbacks still learning the ups and downs of the NFL through trial by fire.

Though the 49ers have hurt themselves of late with a plethora of penalties - hardly the way the NFC West leaders want to be playing in December.

With the season's stretch run ahead and Seattle close behind, San Francisco plans to do all in its power to play mistake-free football against the Dolphins.

Harbaugh, left tackle Joe Staley and linebacker Patrick Willis all insist then Niners need to clean things up in short order.

"We have had some big ones that have really stopped some drives," Harbaugh said. "Some of them were really, really questionable, in our opinion. ... There have been some big ones that have stopped drives or extended drives for the other team. That's not the way we want to play. That's not the 49er way of playing football."

While nobody wants to see mistakes at such an important stage of the season, Staley is convinced some basic attention to detail and the fundamentals might be all it takes to get back on track.

"It's a general trend. We just have to do a better job with our techniques," he said. "When you see some of the holding penalties, it's a technique flaw here or there. Some of those penalties happen in an awkward situation. You don't know where the play is going or it's designed to go one way and it goes the other way."
